On the Vigil of the Dormition [Assumption] of the Mother of God, the two leading prelates of canonical Old Roman Catholicism in the United Kingdom, their Excellencies Archbishop Douglas Lewins of the ORCC/GB and Archbishop Jerome Lloyd OSJV of the ORCCE/LR, met informally for prayer and discussion at the Mother House of the Oratory of St John Vianney, Cosgrove, Northants. Representing the two orthodox branches of Old Roman Catholicism of Matthew and Carfora descent respectively in the United Kingdom, the Archbishops discussed ways in which a more structured and united presentation of the Old Roman Catholic faith and tradition could be effected.
The Old Roman Catholic Church in Great Britain [link] is the continuation of the original jurisdiction founded by Archbishop Mathew in 1911 following his Declaration of Independence from the Union of Utrecht. The Old Roman Catholic Church in Europe Latin Rite [link] descends from the North American Old Roman Catholic Church established by Archbishop Landes Berghes in 1916 and built up by Archbishop Carfora. The current Archbishops of both strains in the UK hope to effect a positive future of cooperation between these two historic strands and provide a model for greater Old Roman Catholic unity.
Archbishop Mathew’s Prayer for Catholic Unity
Almighty and everlasting God, Whose only begotten Son, Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd, has said, “Other sheep I have that are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd”; let Thy rich and abundant blessing rest upon the Old Roman Catholic Church, to the end that it may serve Thy purpose by gathering in the lost and straying sheep. Enlighten, sanctify, and quicken it by the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, that suspicions and prejudices may be disarmed, and the other sheep being brought to hear and to know the voice of their true Shepherd thereby, all may be brought into full and perfect unity in the one fold of Thy Holy Catholic Church, under the wise and loving keeping of Thy Vicar, through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who with Thee and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen.
