The Americas: Metropolitan David of Louisiana is currently visiting France accompanying American War Veterans for a three week tour visiting monuments in the care of the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) for the Memorial Day and Centenary events commemorating the participation of American forces in the Great War (WWI 1914-18). His Grace will visit England and Ireland on his return journey home to the States, meeting with Metropolitan Jerome, clergy and faithful of the Metropolitanate of Selsey.
The Americas: Padre Abelardo Ochoa of the Tres Valley mission in Mexico is appealing for donations towards repairs for his only mode of transport to support himself and serve his parishioners. Whilst returning home after taking the Sacrament to a ninety year old parishioner, Padre Ochoa hit a pothole and had a nasty crash on his motorbike destroying both wheels of the vehicle, but fortunately leaving him with only minor cuts and bruises. Europe: [Saturday, 26 May 2018 ref main picture] Metropolitan Jerome of Selsey accompanied by Fr Andrew Scurr and members of the faithful of the Sussex Mission, ventured into the adjoining county of Kent to join Bishop Damien Mead and the congregation of the Anglican Catholic Church parish of St Augustine of Canterbury, Painter’s Forstal for the Blessing, Dedication and Patronal Festival of their new church building. The Anglican Catholic Church headquartered in the States, is an orthodox Anglican church, the diocese in the UK recently celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary. Metropolitan Jerome will be giving a spiritual conference during the ACC DUK’s diocesan pilgrimage and retreat to the Shrine of the Glorious Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Simon Stock, Aylesford Priory in June.
Europe: [Saturday, 26 May 2018] Metropolitan Jerome of Selsey appointed the Reverend Father Andrew Scurr as Canon Theologian for the Metropolitanate of Selsey. A Canon Theologian is appointed “to assist the Bishop in all matters of theology and to assist in the training of ordinands and act as an Examining Chaplain for ordination scrutiny; to research, investigate, speak and write on behalf of the bishop on theological matters as called upon”. A Canon is also an officer of both the Diocesan Chapter and Provincial Synod and may act as a representative of the Clergy Convocation of either body. Canons also play a key role in the selection of candidates and overseeing the process of electing a new bishop and governing a diocese when a See becomes vacant.
Canon Scurr is an assisting priest in the South East England missionary region served by the Brighton Oratory and himself is based in East Sussex serving title at Our Lady of Walsingham & St Lewinna, Buxted. Before priesting, Canon Scurr studied Mathematics at Christ Church College, Oxford (MA) and a Master of Science degree in Financial Mathematics at Edinburgh before teaching at Mill Hill School and later at the Royal Ballet School before becoming Head of Mathematics at St Edmund’s College Ware, London.
Canon Scurr began formation for the Sacred Ministry at the Venerable English College, Rome and in the novitiate of the Congregation of the Oratory, Brompton, London before continuing vocational discernment and joining the seminary formation programme in the Province of Europe studying for a post-graduate degree whilst working in the Financial Services sector in the City as a Risk Analyst for several major retail banks. In 2013 he was ordained deacon and later priest by Metropolitan Jerome of Selsey. Canon Scurr graduated in 2016 with an Ecclesiastical Bachelor of Divinity degree conferred through Maryvale Higher Institute of Religious Sciences by La Faculté Nôtre-Dame Paris, Ecole Cathedrale, Paris. Undeterred by the experience, Canon Scurr is currently researching programmes for post-graduate Master’s degree studies in Theology or a doctoral thesis!
